Corfu
Corfu is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. It is the second largest of the Ionian Islands, and by far the most important island economically. The capital city of Corfu is also called Corfu.

The earliest evidence of human habitation dates to around 2500 BC; its name was first attested in Latin in 1469 AD as ‘Corcyra’. The ancient Greeks named it Korkyra, which means tortoise. It has been suggested that this may have been due to an abundance of giant tortoises on the island or because they saw it as having some resemblance to an actual tortoise’s shell; however, other theories exist as well. For example, French naturalist Pierre Belon noted that “the shape [of Korkyra] resembles nothing so much as a turtle shell”.
Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki (also known as Thessalonica) is the second largest city in Greece, and it’s located on the Thermaic Gulf. It’s a port city that has been around since ancient times–the Romans called it Salonika, but today it’s known as “Thessaloniki.” The city has a long history: it was founded sometime in 315 BC by Cassander of Macedon, who named his son Alexander I king there; then after Alexander died at age 20 from illness or poison (depending on which version you believe), his wife Roxana ruled over Macedonia until she died herself at age 26 from illness or poison (again depending on which version).

In Byzantine times (AD 330-1453), Thessaloniki served as an important trading post between East and West because of its location near Constantinople (now Istanbul). During Ottoman rule over Greece (AD 1453-1821), many Greek scholars fled to Thessaloniki due to religious persecution elsewhere in Europe; they helped make this city one of Europe’s most important cultural centers during this period!
